From the Estate of Merton Clivette
Lots 138 - 152
Stair Galleries is delighted to offer 15 works from the Estate of Merton Clivette in this auction. Clivette was better known and more highly regarded in his lifetime than he is today and we hope to rekindle well-deserved interest in his vivid and energetic paintings.
A man of many talents, Clivette led a varied career (acrobat, palmist, juggler, astrologer, reporter, author…) before devoting himself to art. He settled in Greenwich Village and was known as “The Man in Black,” a sobriquet from his vaudeville days. Henry Rankin Poore wrote in 1931 that “before Cezanne had sponsored cubism and Matisse freedom” Clivette “was working our kindred theories.” Elizabeth Luther Cary wrote in the New York Times, that “Clivette was the forerunner of Soutine.” In the instantaneous expression evinced on paper or on canvas Clivette presages the abstract art movement that would not blaze in Manhattan until after WWII.
