Here on offer in our March 14-15th sale, we have a Fine Early George III Carved Mahogany Double Chair-Back Settee, circa 1745. (Lot 880). I have known this piece for twenty-five years, as it lived with one of my collector clients, and I always coveted it. This settee is elegant, yet robust with a somewhat masculine design of the back with solid back splats, flanked by birds’ heads, which are beautifully executed.

DSC_1455-shell-detailPerhaps my favorite part is the arms that terminate in beautiful animal masks. Winding our way down, time was taken to make a serpentine front, and conforming apron centered by carved shells.

My second favorite feature is the slightly angular cabriole legs with masks that almost mimic the mask of the arm, but in a single dimension. The ball and claw feet terminate nicely with pierced talons.

DSC_1444-foot-detailThe quality of color and nice, old surface are extra appealing. Perhaps most appealing of all is the value. In a slightly down-turned market, this might be an exceedingly opportune time to purchase this great piece of furniture.
