INVENTORY FROM SALANDER-O’REILLY GALLERIES The furniture reflected the gallery’s focus on early pictures and works of art. There was a very strong selection of predominantly European 17th and 18th century furniture, and a fine small group of American pieces. The 17th and 18th century picture frames in the auction were works of art. We had taken the liberty of adding antique-style mirror plates to some of the frames to enhance the exhibition. The garden decoration on offer is stunning. It was purchased at the Christie’s sale of the Michael Roberts collection, at Ashurst, Kent, U.K. Roberts was one of the early afficionados of architectural elements and ornament and he collected and dealt in this material for 20 years. The important inventory he amassed was sold by Christie’s in September 2004. Salander-O’Reilly spent in excess of 1 million dollars at this sale, and purchased over 120 lots. There are remarkable decorations in many materials including Coade stone, Bath stone, limestone, bronze, sandstone, cast stone, wrought & cast iron and terracotta. There are signed (and some dated) items from famous makers such as Coade, Doulton, Austin & Seeley, Compton Pottery, J&M Craig, James Stiff, Liberty & Co., Joseph Oliff and James Pulham.
