Lot #344: BRONZE FIGURE GROUP: MOTHER AND DAUGHTER, BY DORIS CAESAR
The standing group with mother embracing daughter, impressed signature on base, approx. 17 in. tall. *NOTE* - Doris Porter Caesar (1892-1971) came from a well-to-do New York family. Her father encouraged her desire to become an artist and she attended classes at the Spence School for girls in the morning and spent afternoons at The Art Students League. Like most women of her generation, she took time off from her art studies to marry and have children. In the late 1920's she studied with Alexander Archipenko, who had recently arrive from Paris. She began working in bronze. In the 1940's she produced sculpture groups like Mother and Child, using distortion and texture to express her ideas. In the 1950's she created a series of single, naked femal elongated figures. Forty of her pieces were included in a 1959 Expressionist show at The Whitney Museum. She died in Litchfield, Connecticut at the age of 78.
