Oil on panel, 8 1/4 x 6 1/4 in., unsigned, framed. Provenance: Thos. McClean, London; Private Collector, New York; Thence by descent to the present owner. NOTE: The authenticity of this work has been confirmed and additional information provided by Dr. Vern Grosvenor Swanson. It is yet to be discovered which of Godward's realized works was informed by this oil sketch. It likely dates after the artist's trip to Rome in 1912. Another finished work by Godward of 1915 also portrays the statue of the goddess Sekhmet, from the fountain in the Piazza Popolo, Rome.
