Lot #303: JOHN BELCHER (1841-1913): FINSBURY SQUARE ESTATE
Watercolor and ink on paper. Note: Belcher, born in London in 1841, was the son of an architect and became a partner in his father's firm in 1865. Among his other commissions were the Royal Insurance building in the French Renaissance style, the Mappin & Webb building in the Gothic style and the Hall of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, one of the first Neo-Baroque designs in London. His work on Finsbury Square dates from 1904-05. In 1907 Belcher won the Royal Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects and served as president of RIBA from 1904 to 1906. He died in 1913..
