US Government printing office 1944-0-607943 WFD 942 official US Treasury color poster; 38 1/4 x 29 3/4 in. Note: Texas-born Martha Sawyers was one of the many artists commissioned by the U.S. Office of War Information to create propaganda posters for the war effort. The poster was produced in 1944. In this vivid picture the artillery soldier mans a 50. caliber machine gun. He appears strong and calm as a Mitsubishi Zero fighter plane crashes in the background.
Collier's magazine sent the artist to China, Burma and India during WWII. Numerous illustrated articles about what she observed were published.
