#228: HUGO ROBUS, 1885-1964 Oil on canvas, 26 in. x 34 in., signed lower right,
"Robus". NOTES: This painting was purchased from the
artist circa 1915 by James Curtis Underwood of
Rockland County, New York. The painting, according to
the family of Mr. Underwood, depicts a railroad
bridge over the Hudson in the vicinity of Rockland
County. The painting remained in the family of the
original owner until it was acquired by the present
owner for his personal collection. Hugo Robus is
thought to have painted only 17 or 18 paintings
before he turned to sculpture & he became well known
in that medium. According to the family it was the
prohibitive cost of art supplies that caused him to
turn to the abundant clays of the banks of the Hudson
River for his sculpting. The conservation of this
painting was done by Joel Zakow in New York City. Estimate: 12000.00 - 15000.00 Sold at $10,000
