Lot #57: ZULMA PARKER STEELE (1881-1979): CATSKILL COTTAGES
Oil on canvasboard, 8 x 10 in., signed lower left. Note: According to "Who Was Who in American Art," Steele "was among the first artists to live and work in the utopian colony, Byrdcliffe, founded in 1902 near Woodstock. With Edna Walker she designed "mission oak" furniture on which she painted landscapes and leaf designs, ca. 1902-09. She also made pottery called "Zedware," and designed books. She painted rural Catskill scenes in an Impressionist manner. She married a farmer, Nelson Parker, in 1926. After he died on 1928, she traveled extensively in Europe.
