Great Britain. A Large Collection of Bronze and Silver Issues
A wide ranging assortment including examples of most denominations
(including Maundy issues) farthing through crown, from the
17th to mid-20th century, but predominantly base metal; most
are only fair to fine, but a number are better, a few coins
are scare; included are William III, crown, 1696, fine; George
III, crown, 1819 (LIX), dull but very fine or better; 1820,
fair; Cartwheel 2 pence, 1797, good, together with a small
number of miscellaneous United States minor coinage, Barber
nickels, and other issues, primarily very worn. Overall a
most interesting and wide-ranging group of coins which bears
close inspection (approx. 350 pieces). Sold as a lot, not

Mainly satirical types, including 1834, Low 8(2), 12,
17(2); 1837, Low 18(2), 19 (8), 20 (4), 31, 36, 37, 46,
47, 48 (2), 51 (6), 53; 1841, Low 58, 60 (2), 62 (3),
64, 67, 68, 69, a number with graffiti, generally fair
to very fine, an interesting group (49 pieces). Sold as
a lot, not subject to return.
A fascinating series which has local, Columbia
County, interest as they were struck during Martin Van Buren’s
terms as Vice President (under Andrew Jackson) and later President
of the United States, in response to the administrations’
actions during this financially perilous period.

AM I NOT A WOMAN AND A SISTER
Female slave kneeling right, rev., UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
around; within wreath, LIBERTY|1838 (Low 54; Rulau 81),
very good to about very fine (2 pieces). Sold as a lot,

One of the most popular and evocative types
commissioned in late 1837 by the American Anti-Slavery Society
in New York. Their issuance was quickly suppressed by the
United States Mint.

Robinson, 1836, Low 103, 104(3); Henry Anderson, 1837, Low
107(2); Centre Market, 1837, Low 111(2); H. Crossman, 1837,
Low 112; William Simes, 1837, Low 124; E.F.Sise & Co.,
1837, Low 132(2); Smith’s Clock Establishment, 187,
Low 134, Rulau 313, fair to about extremely fine, a useful
group including a number of scarce issues (20 pieces). Sold

An interesting cross section of primarily New
York issuers of these early advertising tokens, which, it
has been suggested, were struck as status symbols by the more
affluent merchants.
