Note: Winold Reiss (1886-1953), traveled from his home in the Black Forest of Germany to the US in 1913. Inspired by the writing of James Fenimore Cooper, he hoped to depict the lives of the American Indians. He established a design business in NY before heading West in 1919 and throughout his life his design ventures provided the capital for him to live with and paint the Indians.
