Oil on zinc, glued to foamcore, 31 1/2 x 39 1/2 in. (sight). Note: Hofmann, along with John Rasmussen and Louis Mader, were known as the Pennsylvania almshouse painters. All three men were, from time to time, vagrants battling intemperance. Over the years, they frequently rendered paintings of the places that provided them with food and shelter.
