Lot #179: RUFUS HATHAWAY (1770-1822): HALF-LENGTH PORTRAIT OF ISRAEL FORSTER
Oil on canvas, relined, 20 x 17 in., unsigned. Note: Israel Forster (1775/1782-1863) was born in Andover, Ma and lived in Manchester, MA. This portrait depicts him at approx. 9 years of age. He married Hannah Lee in 1802 and built a home on Central Street in Manchester. He fought in the War of 1812, a Major of the militia. He served as a Town Selectman for years and represented Manchester in the Commonwealth Legislature in 1810 and 1836. Rufus Hathaway (1770-1822) was both a medical doctor and an artist. Perhaps his earliest known commission, lady with her pets, was given to the Metropolitan Museum of Art by the Garbisches. Provenance: Present owner; Sotheby's sale circa 1999; James Abbe Jr. and Joanne Badami, Oyster Bay, NY.
