Lot #61: CIVIL WAR ARCHIVE: A UNIQUE LAWYER'S ARCHIVE OF LETTERS, DOCUMENTS AND FORMS RELATING TO CIVIL WAR ENLISTMENTS, BOUNTIES, PENSIONS AND SURVIVOR'S BENEFITS
1861-1867. Housed in four binders, approximately 300 pieces. The law firm was in New York City and Hudson, NY, and acted as legal claims agents for soldiers, draftees, pensioners and pensioner's families. The firm served notices on draftees, confirmed draft of soldiers, disabilities and petitioned for benefits on behalf of soldiers, mothers and widows. Most of the material is handwritten but includes blank and completed forms. All of the material concerns Columbia County, NY. An unusual and important view of the American Civil War.

Lot #64: (SIGNED) FERRIS, WILLIAM H. "THE AFRICAN ABROAD OR HIS EVOLUTION IN WESTERN CIVILIZATION. TRACING DEVELOPMENT UNDER CAUCASIAN MILIEU"
New Haven, Tuttle, Morchause & Taylor, 1913. First edition, 8VO, 2 volumes. Illustrated with photo and print reproductions. Red cloth binding. Fine copy. Signed by the author in both volumes. A proposed third volume was apparently not published. (not new paragraph) Ferris was a graduate of Yale and Harvard. An ambiguous figure being a black nationalist but also an assimilationist, i.e. the Negro (or Negro-Saxon, the label he preferred) should be made over into the image of the white man. Criticized by most black leaders, he was warmly received by Marcus Garvey.

Lot #65: (JULIA WARD HOWE'S COPY) FABENS, JOSEPH WARREN. "LIFE IN SANTA DOMINGO, BY A SETTLER"
New York, G.W. Carleton, 1873. Rust gilt decorated cloth; black palm tree in blind. Julia Ward Howe's copy, inscribed on the title page, "Mrs. Julia Ward Howe from the Samana Bay Co. of Santa Domingo, July, 1873;" with the signature of Howe's daughter "Maude Howe Elliott" in pencil on the front endpaper. Howe was a participant in many 19th century social movements, including prison reform, suffrage and the abolition of slavery. Howe and her husband visited the Dominican Republic several times. He had been appointed by U.S. Government to evaluate the annexing of Santa Domingo.

Two volumes. Volume 1 is in wraps and covers. 1806-1808 lists defendants, lawyers, decisions. Volume 2 is a leather bound book. This is more detailed and lists the jurors and a brief narrative of the case.
