From the Estate of William Carrigan, William Carrigan was born in San Francisco in September 1868. He studied at the California School of Design, probably when it was directed by Emil Carlsen. Carlsen left the West Coast in 1892 and returned to New York. Carrigan apparently moved east to pursue his studies with Carlsen, both in New York City and in Falls Village, Connecticut, where Carlsen built a home in 1905 and Carrigan followed suit in 1909 to be near his friend and teacher. Carrigan had shows at the Feragil Gallery in New York and Vose Gallery in Boston. His work was exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Panama Pacific International Exposition. He was a member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art, the American Federation of Arts and an associate member of the National Academy of Design. The paintings offered here are in their original frames chosen by Carrigan. These paintings were removed from Carrigan's home in Falls Village by Stair Galleries this past summer, where they had hung since his death in 1939.
