Lot #27: SET OF TEN GEORGE III CARVED MAHOGANY DINING CHAIRS
Including 2 armchairs; the shaped crests above pierced baluster splats & the upholstered seats on canted legs joined by H-stretchers; height: 37 1/4 in. Provenance: The Rt. Hon. the Viscount Downe, Wykeham Abbey (Scarborough, Yorkshire) to Frank Partridge & Sons, Ltd., London; to the present owner, with a sales receipt dated 19 April 1958. The 12th Viscount Downe currently inhabits Wykeham Abbey, an 18th c. house. The Abbey was built on the site of a Cistercian Priory founded in 1153. Following the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII, the property was acquired by the Langleys who left the estate to a cousin, Marmaduke Dawnay, in 1820. In 1656, John Dawnay, later created Viscount Downe, purchased the Danby Estate near Whitby, which included a castle of 14th/15th c. origin and acres of surrounding moors teeming with grouse, partridge and pheasant. In the mid 18th c. the Dawnays used a shooting lodge for the family home, which was substantially adapted and expanded to accommodate the family, guests and servants. The Dawnay Estates now consist of the two properties in Wykeham & Danby.
