The 12th Viscount Downe currently inhabits Wykeham
Abbey, an 18th c. house. The Abbey was built on
the site of a Cistercian Priory founded in 1153.
Following the dissolution of the monasteries by
Henry VIII, the property was acquired by the
Langleys who left the estate to a cousin,
Marmaduke Dawnay, in 1820.
In 1656, John Dawnay, later created Viscount Downe,
purchased the Danby Estate near Whitby, which
included a castle of 14th/15th c. origin and acres
of surrounding moors teeming with grouse,
partridge and pheasant. In the mid 18th c. the
Dawnays used a shooting lodge for the family home,
which was substantially adapted and expanded to
accommodate the family, guests and servants. The
Dawnay Estates now consist of the two properties
in Wykeham & Danby.
