#949: LOUIS GRUBE (1812-1902): THE OLD STONE HOUSE
(BROOKLYN)
Oil on canvas, 10 x 14 in., signed and dated lower left, L.
Grube/1871. Note: This house was built by Claes Vechte beside
the Gowanus Creek in 1699. In August 1776 during the battle
of Brooklyn, Long Island, the house was held by 2000 British
and Hessian soldiers. 400 men of the Maryland Brigade attacked
the house 6 times and gained it twice, but ultimately, they
lost. In 1797, the house was sold to the Cortelyou family. During
the later part of the 19th c., the house became the first clubhouse
of the Brooklyn Dodgers. It was razed in 1897, but rebuilt using
the original brick in 1930-1934. It is now part of the Historic
House Trust of NYC.
