The crest with shield of the Republic, the entrelac & petal tip rail on foliate tapered legs; 39 3/4 x 25 x 23 in. Note: this chair was designed by Thomas U. Walter, architect of the U.S. Capitol extension between 1851 & 1865, for use in the renovated Capitol. His original drawing is dated May 28, 1857. The ornamentation uses the same motifs that Walter developed for the Capitol.
