Signed and inscribed Cet exemplaire du LIT-CAGE porte le no. 11/99 on brass plaque affixed to gate; bed consisting of headboard with movable gates, footboard and platform, all made of African walnut with brass rods, two compartments in platform at bedsides, each with a trap door, two tinted movable mirrors, each backed by offset lithograph printed in colors and signed with initials, one suspended from headboard, the other attached to footboard; two cloth-covered platforms; coverlet of mink and velvet with design of two birds based on a drawing by the artist; three panel screen, signed, oil, wood and offset lithograph collage on panel. Total length of bed: 102 3/4 in., headboard and footboard 85 x 103 in. (gates closed), 148 in. (gates extended), diameters of mirrors: 26 in.; 16 5/8 in., bedcover: 113 x 98 in., three-panel screen: 72 5/8 x 64 in. Provenance: Modarco, Geneva; Roberta Boxer (sale, Sotheby's, New York, October 7, 1987, lot 227, illustrated) aquired by the present owner from the above sale. References - Werner Spies, Sigrid & Gunter Metken, Max Ernst Oeuvre Katalog Vol VI: Werke 1954-1963, Houston & Cologne, 1998, no. 3710. Note: In 1974, Max Ernst was commissioned by Modarco of Geneva to design and develop Lit-Cage et Son Paravent. Although Ernst was paid royalties for an edition of ninety-nine screens and fifty beds, only the screens and fifteen of the beds were produced before the artist's death in 1976. The lot is accompanied by a photocopy of the certificate signed by the artist and numbered 11, dated Seillans, February, 1974, and the promotional brochure for the work.
