The Collection of Aso O. Tavitian | New York & Stockbridge
STAIR is proud to present a three-day single-owner sale of property from the late Aso O. Tavitian on March 19, 20, and 21. A true connoisseur, Tavitian assembled an extraordinary collection of English furniture, decorative arts, European sculpture, and garden statuary. Each item in the collection was selected with the meticulous eye and refined sensibility that defined Tavitian’s approach to collecting.
A self-made man who immigrated to the United States as a young adult, Tavitian cultivated his passion for art and antiques independently, guided by a relentless curiosity and an instinctive appreciation for quality. He valued scholarship and craftsmanship, forging lasting relationships with dealers, auction house specialists, and artisans who helped him refine his collection over the years. The interior architecture of Tavitian’s homes in New York City and in Stockbridge, MA were masterfully designed in collaboration with architect Peter Pennoyer, creating immersive environments where art and architecture existed in perfect harmony. Every room was carefully considered, with period furnishings and objects placed in dialogue with their surroundings, reinforcing Tavitian’s belief that a great collection is not simply assembled but thoughtfully integrated into the spaces it inhabits.
Highlights from the three-day sale include English and Continental furniture, works of Fine Art, objects of vertu, and to round out the collection, the most exquisite group of English and American garden statuary.

Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Tavitian Foundation, furthering its mission to support education, public service, and the arts. Among its key initiatives, the Foundation is committed to advancing the work of the Clark Art Institute, located near Tavitian’s Stockbridge home in the Berkshires. Auction proceeds will directly support the endowment of a full-time curatorial position to oversee a landmark gift of 331 works of art to the museum, ensuring the collection’s long-term care, as well as the construction of the Aso O. Tavitian Wing.
“Mr. Tavitian’s collection is one of the most comprehensive and finely curated we’ve had the privilege to handle. He had an extraordinary eye and sought out the finest objects from top dealers around the world. His passion for collecting was unmatched—built over a remarkably short period, yet with a depth and quality rarely seen.” said Colin Stair, President of STAIR.
