Results from River Ranch: The Collection of Carole Harris

STAIR is proud to share exceptional results for the single-owner sale of River Ranch: The Collection of Carole Harris. With a pre-sale estimate of $1,553,500 to $2,501,300, the three-day auction achieved a final hammer total of $4,483,250. The top lot of the sale was the “Coco Chanel Cabinet” (Lot 83), which soared to $700,000 after competitive bidding. The George I Bottle Green and Gilt-Japanned Bureau Cabinet, attributed to John Belchier (Lot 17) brought the second-highest hammer price at $255,000, following spirited bidding and ultimately going to an online buyer. Porcelain florals were standouts across the sales, with highlights including topiaries by Clare Potter (Lots 49 and 51) and Vladimir Kanevsky (Lots 435 and 437).

“By following our approach of Selling Interesting Things, From Interesting People, we’ve captivated a passionate community of collectors drawn to 17th-, 18th-, and 19th-century furniture and works of art. We’ve never looked in the rearview mirror of the decorative arts—and we remain committed to championing these collecting categories and celebrating quality and taste. This market is vibrant and full of life,” said Colin Stair, Founder and President of STAIR.

The sale was on view in Hudson, NY for 15 days, with a fully-illustrated online catalogue. Thousands of collectors from across the globe visited the gallery in person. To commemorate the event, STAIR published a limited-edition book celebrating the life and taste of Carole Harris, featuring photography taken at River Ranch in January 2025.

Bidders from around the globe participated in the auction, hailing from 16 countries including the United Kingdom, France, China, Germany, India and Australia. STAIR welcomed many new clients, with over 22% of bidders new to bidding directly with STAIR. Outside of the New York Metropolitan area, Dallas, Houston, Chicago and Palm Beach were top national bidding locations. Ninety percent of the bidding took place via STAIR platforms, with phone bidding and live online bidding driving the greatest dollar amounts.

During the previous week, on June 12, STAIR offered jewelry from The Collection of Carole Harris as part of its Fine Jewelry sale.
