Jordan Saunders is a dedicated civic leader and philanthropist whose work spans national defense, historic preservation, higher education, health care, and the arts. She and her late husband, Thomas A. Saunders III, were the first couple jointly awarded the National Humanities Medal in 2008. With over 25 years on the Marine Corps University Foundation’s Board of Trustees, she has also served by appointment on the Jamestown 400th Commemoration Commission and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Board. Her extensive involvement includes leadership roles with Northwell Health, the School of American Ballet, and the Society of the Four Arts, among many others.
A skilled hostess, Mrs. Saunders chaired major fundraising events for the University of Virginia and Virginia Military Institute, where she received rare honors, including full military dress parades. Mrs. Saunders’ passion for preservation was sparked at age ten during a vibrant country auction in Virginia, a moment that launched a lifelong fascination with history and the arts, she recalls…
“When I was ten, my mother took me to a country auction in Virginia near the Marine Corps base where we lived. In a tent with a dirt floor and a portable stage, we sat on a wooden bench watching the auctioneer point to lots with his cane, a sea of bidders holding chipped wooden paddles aloft. Next to the circus, it was the most vibrant and thrilling thing I had ever seen! My mother went home with a charger. I went home with a life-long addiction.”
