Collection Highlights from The Way We Were: The Collection of Alan and Marilyn Bergman

Complemented by decorative objects and a curated selection of memorabilia and ephemera, The Collection of Alan and Marilyn Bergman represents their special world and offers a glimpse into how they lived and what they chose to surround themselves with.

Americana, English Staffordshire, treen, French tole, majolica, tartan ware and fine art by American and European artists lived comfortably together in the Beverly Hills home of famed songwriters Alan and Marilyn Bergman. The Bergmans collected what they loved and lived with these items in a relaxed and harmonious home that welcomed the who’s-who of Hollywood over many decades of entertaining musicians, producers and the creative elite of Los Angeles. From New York to California, the Bergmans brought their love of visually interesting things with them to form a collection that represented their American roots and expressed their love of France and French art, as well as their interest in porcelain and other decorative arts.

Several themes run through the collection, including decorative botanical motifs and portraiture, as well as their love of Americana and music-related material. American embroidery samplers and miniature wooden chairs complement the extensive collection of floral majolica, treen boxes and yellow tole ware that graced the surfaces in the Bergman home. Fine art covered the walls in every room of the house, with works by Aaron Shickler, Robert Kulicke, David Levine and Albert York hanging happily alongside European works by Eduard Vuillard, Gwen John, Kathe Kollwitz, Pierre Bonnard and Aristide Maillol. Modern works by Henry Moore and Pablo Picasso, along with contemporary works by their friend Jim Dine, helped give further depth to the collection and illustrate the Bergmans’ varied interests.
