British Contemporary Art in Upcoming Sales

British artists working in many different styles since the 1960s have created a rich body of work that represents a singularly British style. Spearheaded by Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, and the British Pop icon David Hockney,  modern British artists have laid the groundwork for many contemporary and emerging  artists. In the 1980s, a loosely-affiliated  group of artists, including Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Cornelia Parker and Tracey Emin, became known as The Young British Artists and burst on to the international art scene. There was no specific YBA style, although certain trends can be seen in their novel use of materials and process.  Their work draws stylistically from Minimalism and Conceptualism, often focusing on the darker aspects of contemporary life and creating a new form of creativity that opened doors for some of their young contemporaries working today. Many other artists have contributed significantly to the British contemporary art canon, including  Jenny Saville, Bridget Riley, Glenn Brown, Antony Gormley and Banksy, to name only a few.

Our upcoming sales will offer several noteworthy works by British contemporary artists, including works by Patrick Proctor, Jeremy Moon, Richard Smith, Keith Millow, John Bratby, Jack Smith and Tony Bevan.
