Flora Danica in The Fine Sale
Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica has been coveted across the globe for centuries. Today the service is still bespoke and made to order. Each piece is hand painted with realistic Danish botanical representations copied from the 1761 encyclopedia Flora Danica, the species are named in script on the base of each piece. Inextricably associated with the Danish Royal Family, the first service was originally commissioned in 1790 to repair the relationship with Catherine the Great and Russia. Catherine had been passionately acquiring fine porcelain for the Imperial Collection and this was Denmark’s opportunity to present a service of unparalleled quality. Intended as a gift for the 40thanniversary of her reign, she unfortunately died before it was completed and the porcelain was never delivered. It was so beloved by the Danish that the service was retained by the King for the palace and is still used for state dinners today. Modern Flora Danica is often commissioned by the Royal Family for diplomatic gifts and can be ordered by non-royals to grace private homes. Luxurious in style and feel, Flora Danica is one of the oldest porcelain patterns still in production, the time-honored methods by which the service is produced have not changed.
