Maine Modern

The landscape and seascape of Maine have been the subject and inspiration for many American artists. Maine’s dramatic coastline played the muse for New York artists Murray Hantman and Jo Levy who painted there from the 1940s until the end of their lives. Maine artist William Thon was equally inspired by his surroundings, painting both on the coast and inland, with a focus on boats, harbors and the changing seasons in the Maine woods. This sale offers works by all three artists in various media, illustrating the drama of sea and sky through abstract and modernist compositions imbedded with each artist’s love of Maine.
