A Partial Gentleman’s Library: Important Books from Around the World

Originally part of a large gentleman’s library, this small collection of important books includes James Cook’s rare set of Cook’s Three Voyages, which documents Cook’s voyages in the South Pacific from 1768 to 1776 and the great age of maritime discovery that transformed European understanding of the New World. Cook was considered the first scientific navigator to explore this area, observing the Transit of Venus in Tahiti, rediscovering and charting New Zealand, and discovering the eastern coast of Australia. Other great men in history are represented in this collection, including The Complete Writings of Theodore Roosevelt, The Life of George Washington by John Marshall, and an eight-volume set on Winston Churchill. An early Oxford English Dictionary and Vincent Houdry’s Biblioteca Concionatoria Theologica de Mysteria round out the offerings.
