Erotica from the Allan Stone Collection

Acquired over decades of collecting, the collection of Erotica from the Allan Stone Collection deals with subject matter that is meant to push the romantic impulse to something more ambiguous and erotically stimulating. The history of Erotic Art dates back to the homoerotic imagery of the Hellenic Period and follows the sexual taboos and mores of society across the centuries. In this collection, sculpture, paintings and works on paper by modern artists Gaston Lachaise, Hans Bellmer and John Graham are complemented by contemporary works by artists such as Richard Hickam and  James Aponovich. A sense of humor with the subject matter can be seen in the sculpture by Barton Benes and Robert Quigley. Also included in the sale are Japanese erotic drawings and ethnographic wood sculpture. Seen together as a whole, the collection gives a glimpse into how we see the human body and sexuality in its many forms, and how artists channel their own views and desires into provocative works of art.
