Maine on Paper

The natural beauty, dramatic coastline and maritime history of the state of Maine has drawn artists to its shores and inland forests since the 19th Century. Inspiring painters Winslow Homer, Marsden Hartley, John Marin, Alex Katz and Andrew and Jamie Wyeth, to name only a few, the Maine landscape is known for its jagged, rocky seashore, rolling mountains and heavily forested interior, as well as picturesque coastal towns and the seafaring life.

Maine on Paper offers a selection of drawings by a small group of artists who lived and worked in Maine during the 20th Century. Murray Hantman, William Thon, Jo Levy, Martha Levy and Carl Gordon Cutler were all dedicated to their art and to the landscape and lifestyle of the Pine Tree State. Through their art they explored the new ideas of Modern Art, color theory and abstraction, moving away from traditional American Art as they remained loyal to the place they called home.
