A Collection of Furnishings and Objects from the Works of Michael S. Smith
There’s something particularly wonderful about collaborating with Stair on this auction, as I’ve bought so many terrific pieces from them over the years—and I’ve always felt that their team has as much fun finding the objects and compiling their sales as we do shopping from them.
I’m excited about our upcoming sale, as it’s a selection of beautiful furnishings from several projects that I’ve designed over a period of time, as well as from my personal collection. Since I’m constantly on the hunt for new treasures, my storerooms and those of my clients are overflowing. There are striking pieces that were purchased from some of the most extraordinary dealers in the world, in addition to some amazing decorating basics—classic upholstered sofas and chairs, myriad cocktail and side tables, gorgeous folding screens and carpets, a variety of porcelain accessories, and marvelous lamps and light fixtures.
My favorites range from an iconic black-lacquer Royale table by Jansen to an important Louis XVI Ormolu-Mounted Mahogany Bed, by master cabinet-maker J.Pafrat. I’m fascinated by the ghostlike quality of an Alessandro Albrizzi Lucite dining table that appears to float in a room, and there’s an incredible, much-loved Regency recamier that has traveled with me to and from several of my houses and apartments over the years.
I find it fun to shop a sale like this because they’re always so unexpected—stocked with sensational pieces that might make a great foundation for your next design project or the perfect finishing touch for a room that’s nearly complete. Plus, everything isn’t precious—and is there a surprise any better than falling for something that’s actually within your price range?
