The Vereinigung bildener Künstler Oesterreichs, or Vienna Secession, was formed in 1897 and led by one of the most well known symbolist painters, Gustav Klimt. The group was comprised of painters, sculptors, and architects all looking to break away from the existing art academies or groups of the time.

There were no unifying characteristics of Viennese Secessionist painting or sculpture, or even architecture. Instead, its members were committed to the ideal of modernizing Austrian art by acquainting it with the latest modern art movements, including the latest trends in Post-Impressionism and Expressionism, as well as the fashionable styles of decorative art, like Art Nouveau.

On February 14, Stair is offering a fine selection of works from the Vienna Secessionist and Modern Design movements including  furniture, metalwork, glass, silver, ceramics and graphic design.
