Lot #23: DICKENS, CHARLES - AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED TO PERCY FITZGERALD, 10/13/1869, ON "ALL THE YEAR ROUND" LETTERHEAD
Framed and matted with an engraved portrait of Dickens. Fitzgerald was a close friend of Dickens and was a frequent contributor to "All the Year Round." Note reads, "My Dear Fitzgerald, Make yourself quite easy. There is not the slightest need for hurry, and you can take your own time. I have a story in 2 parts still to place in ____ not yet made up. Until Wednesday and Always, Faithfully Yours, Charles Dickens."

London, Bradbury & Evans, 1848. First edition, first issue, thick 8VO. Engraved frontis, title and 38 plates by H.K. Browne. Full red morocco by Sawyer; gilt spine; minor rubs; half title is not present. First issue points: (1) Title page vignette: Captain Cuttles hook is on his left arm. (2) Two line eratta (12 line eratta laid-in). (3) Page XV - no page number for frontis and vignette and no quotation marks around "the party." (4) Page 14 - 10 lines up, "ain't" has no apostrophe. (5) Page 26 - line 11 has "fidgetty." (6) Page 40 - "shewed" and "shew" instead of "showed" and "show." (7) Page 284 - 5th and 6th line from the bottom, "Delight" instead of "Joy." (8) Page 324 - last line, "Capatin" instead of "Captain." (9) Page 426 - line 9, "if" is missing. (10) Page 431 - page number present (as usual). (11) Page 582 - last line has no full stop. (12) Plate at 547 is the dark plate.

London, Bradbury & Evans, 1857. First edition in book form, 8VO, first issue. 40 engraved illustrations by H.K. Browne (Phiz) including the frontis and vignette title pages. Red morocco by Riviere. Gilt lion on front board and heavily gilt spine. Front doublure is a calf panel with a watercolor of the plate at page 257. "Mr. Flintwick has a mild attack of irritability" rear doublure in red satin. Both surrounded by heavy gilt design.

Other very minor chips. Front flap seperated at the crease, but all present. First issue with unbattered type on pp. 38, 90 & 248. Lips of girl on dust jacket unbattered.
