The Cartier Empire

The renowned French firm Cartier was founded in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier (1819-1904) in a small Parisian workshop he took over from his mentor, the master watchmaker Aldolphe Picard.

A skilled jeweler, Louis-François Cartier created some of the company’s most celebrated designs, such as the mystery clock with a transparent dial and hidden mechanism, the first wristwatch, and the famed “Tutti Frutti” jewels. Cartier was a trendsetter for ‘number stamping’ the items he produced in his workshop making each item personalized and unique.

The Cartier brand was a family affair. Louis-François’ son Alfred took over the company and created the Paris showroom on Rue de la Paix. This location set the stage for spectacular opulence and became a meeting place for French society.

While continuing to build the business at the Rue de la Paix location, Louis-François and Alfred introduced Alfred’s his three sons, Louis, Pierre and Jacques, into the business. With their skillsets, the Cartier name was established worldwide.

For generations, the success of the Cartier empire has reigned at the top of the industry. Nicknamed ‘King of Jewelers, Jeweler of Kings’, this luxury brand has fascinated loyal customers around the world. From fairly humble beginnings on a modest Paris street, to being a multi-billion dollar international luxury conglomerate, Cartier represents quality, elegance and everlasting style.
