Fine Art Highlights from the Collection of Richard P. Mellon

Richard Mellon’s collection of paintings and works on paper represents his interest in history, the sporting life, and American Western art. Highlights include three of Thomas Hart Benton’s best lithographs, The Race, Jesse James and Encounter of Two Trains, and sporting art by Henry Koehler including the painting Morning Work, as well as several works on paper depicting jockeys and racehorses. Mellon spent childhood summers in England where he developed a love of English history and interiors, represented in the fine art section of the sale by a handsome portrait attributed to Gainsborough Dupont, and a series of watercolors by John Hardman Studio of architectural facades and designs. Other highlights include a large watercolor by fellow Pennsylvanian Jamie Wyeth, and watercolors of WWII subjects by Ogden Pleissner.
