Property From the Collection of Gayfryd Steinberg
Wednesday, October 20 at 11am

The pinnacle of taste and outstanding provenance, the Collection of Gayfryd Steinberg offers a glimpse into one of New York’s most celebrated private interiors. Formed over many years, the collection represents the refined eye of Mrs. Steinberg and her appreciation of Classicism, history and literature. Furniture highlights include a rare Directoire Brass and Ormolu-Mounted Mahogany and Ebonized Slat-Front Standing Desk, a Regency Carved Oak Armchair in the Manner of Thomas Hope, two Fine Regency Globes on Mahogany Stands by William and Thomas M. Bardin, and a Regency Brass-Mounted Mahogany Standish. The Steinberg’s impressive library is represented in the sale by a fine collection of books, including four volumes of George William Sheldon’s Artistic Houses, published in 1883. Decorative arts from the residence include porcelain and  Georgian silver, a marble bust of the Greek Goddess Hera, after the antique, and a Chinese Ormolu-Mounted Famille Noir Porcelain Jardiniere. Mrs. Steinberg’s love of the Old Masters can be seen in the selection of fine art, including a Lambert Van Noort drawing titled The Annunciation, Bernardino India’s Venus Holding an Apple with Cupid, as well as French and Italian architectural views and scenes from mythology. Offered together in this multi-category format, the Collection of Gayfryd Steinberg is a lesson in the appreciation of the fine and decorative arts and represents the aesthetic acumen of Mrs. Steinberg and her ability to create the beautiful interiors these objects occupied.
