THE COLLECTION OF MATTHEW RUTENBERG

The Collection of Matthew Rutenberg is a connoisseur’s collection, as varied and interesting as the collector himself. Spanning centuries, the works in this collection range from the Old Masters to contemporary, with a few areas of particular concentration. Rutenberg’s own academic interest led him to European works from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, especially landscape studies, and to modern British art and works by other contemporary artists. His deep knowledge about Old Master paintings led him to buy many unattributed works that he would research until an attribution could be made. Rutenberg was generous with his time, friendship, and knowledge. As were his wishes, his estate has donated works to several museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Yale University Art Gallery and Center for British Art, and the Ringling Museum. Highlights form the collection include works by Philippe-Auguste Hennequin, Paul Huet, Achille Michalon, Jasper Johns, Tony Bevan and a group of 19th century bronzes.
