LONDON, 1869
1st edition, 1st issue (with no mention of Alice on the title
page.) Blue cloth with gilt Crab Nebula and Donath's Comet
on the boards. Cloth faded, front free end paper loose. Rebacked.
Provenance - Maud Cecil's copy - Inscribed "Maud Cecil
from (musical notation) Xmas 1869". Maud Cecil was the
daughter of Lord Cecil of Hatfield House. Carroll visited
Hatfield House at Christmas time for a number of years. He
told stories and gave recitals at the annual children's party.
These story telling sessions were the basis for the early
chapters of "Sylvie and Bruno". There are records

- "Alice" and this title. Although this is not
a characteristic Carroll's presentation - it may have been
inscribed by Carroll. Title page has library stamp, "Hatfield
